Not So Fast"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There are certain things that just evoke America<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">:&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;&#8211; <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Baseball.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8211; Uncle Sam. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8211; Cor<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n fields.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8211; Apple pie. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0But what if we told you one of these iconic\u00a0symbols\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">really<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0belong on the list?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Turns out there\u2019s nothing all that American a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">bout<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;apple pie. In fact,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;neither apples&nbsp;<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">or&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">pie originated in North America: the ancient Egyptians&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">get<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;credit for<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">creating pie<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;modern&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">pples<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">originated<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;in the mountains of Kazakhstan<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">then&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">spread along the Silk Roads from Central Asia to Europe<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">While early pies were&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">made with meat<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Emily Upton, writing for&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Today I Found Out<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, reports that the first recorded apple pie<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;recipe&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">was<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;from England&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">way back&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in 1381. These early recipes bear little resemblance to the apple pie<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;we know today\u2014they rarely called for sugar&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(which was an expensive, luxury ingredient at that time)&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and came served in a pastry that went by the rather u<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">appetizing name of \u201ccoffin.\u201d This \u201ccoffin\u201d was not meant to be eaten; it was really just&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a container to hold the filling, sort of the Middle Ages version&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;paper plate.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The first apple pie recipe that resembles the pie we know and loves today, with a sweetened filling and a lattice top, appeared in a <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">1514&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dutch cookbook<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">So how did apple pie<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2014which is so deeply rooted in Europe\u2014<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">become synonymous with America?&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">European-style apple trees arrived on American shores with the Jamestown colonists, who brought&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">seeds<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;and cuttings to plant in the New World. (And here\u2019s a&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">fun fact<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;from&nbsp;<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What\u2019s Cooking America<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">: In&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">C<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">olonial times, apples were&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">sometimes&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">called&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">winter bananas.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">) As colonists pushed westward, they brought apples with them<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Upton credits&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Johnny Appleseed&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">with cementing the apple as part of American folklore, as he roamed the frontier planting&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">acres upon acres of apple&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">orchards. By the 19<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> century, American farmers had&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">plant<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;and cross-pollinat<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;trees to develop an astounding&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">14,000 different varieties<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;of apples.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">And of course, many of those varieties were perfect for making pie.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">(<strong>Also Read<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/cookingenie.com\/content\/blog\/a-whirlwind-tour-of-us-barbecue\/\">A Whirlwind Tour of US Barbecue<\/a><strong>)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Nearly as intriguing as the history of the apple in America is<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;the history of the phrase \u201cas American as apple pie.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;Upton cites a newspaper article in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">1902 that&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">said<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;\u201cno pie-eating people can be permanently vanquished\u201d and a 1924 ad in the&nbsp;<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Gettysburg Times<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;selling \u201cNew&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Lestz<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;Suits that are as American as apple pie.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The phrase became such a part of the American fabric that by World War II, soldiers&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">told<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;journalists that they were fighting for \u201cmom and apple pie.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Apple pie may have become a symbol of all that\u2019s good about Americans, but there is a dessert that\u2019s actually a better candidate for the title. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">W<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hile it might not have the same ring, a more apt phrase might be \u201cAs American as a blueberry cobbler.\u201d <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Unlike the apple, b<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lueberries\u2014along with&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">black cherries, strawberries, cranberries, and elderberries\u2014are native to North America<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and cobblers are a uniquely American creation. These fruit and pastry desserts, along with regional variations with such colorful names as Bettys, pandowdies, grunts, slumps, buckles, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">sonkers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, crumbles, and crisps were created by early American settlers who turned to the simple ingredients they had on hand to create <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">satisfying&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">desserts.
