Butter Chicken

Butter chicken is a rich, creamy Indian dish made with marinated chicken simmered in a tomato-based sauce. Also known as Murgh Makhani, butter chicken originated in Delhi, India in the 1950s and has since become one of the most popular Indian dishes worldwide.

The dish begins with boneless chicken, typically marinated in yogurt and spices like garam masala, turmeric, cumin, and chili powder. After marinating, the chicken is grilled or pan-seared, then simmered in a velvety sauce made from butter, tomatoes, cream, and aromatic spices. The result is a mildly spiced, slightly sweet curry with a smooth, luxurious texture.

Butter chicken is often served with naan (Indian flatbread) or steamed basmati rice, making it a comforting, satisfying meal. While it’s traditionally made with dairy, dairy-free versions using coconut cream or plant-based butter are becoming more popular for those following special diets.

Loved for its bold flavor and crowd-pleasing appeal, butter chicken strikes a balance between spice and richness, making it a go-to dish for both Indian food newcomers and long-time fans.
